The site on the Mediterranean about 8km south of the city of Benghazi covers some 325 hectares of virtually flat land. The first buildings completed were the Faculty of Art, Economics and Law for 6,750 students, a Library accommodating 1 million volumes and 3000 readers, the Administration building and Central Services area.
The master plan of the university campus included a dormitory one for y bedrooms, with central kitchens and dining halls. The accommodation comprises a mix of single bedrooms and dormitory rooms for 4 students. All rooms overlook private landscaped gardens suitable for private relaxation and study. Later phases provided two dormitories and dining halls and dining halls for 2,500 students and sports facilities with a further phase of student dormitories. Lastly a Faculty of Science and Engineering for 4,200 and 3,500 students was provided.
